Bulgarian company for digital nomads

A nomad usually needs two things: an entity that clients and banks recognise, and a defensible answer to the question of where they are tax resident. Bulgaria answers the first cheaply. The second is on you, and no company structure solves it by itself.

Corporate tax
10% flat
Dividends
5% withholding
Setup
Remote, 3-7 business days

Why it fits digital nomads

  • An EU company with a VAT number is accepted by clients, payment processors and banks in a way that an offshore entity is not.
  • 10% corporate and 5% dividends keeps the entity-level cost low while you are moving.
  • Everything (registration, filings, signatures) works remotely, so you do not need to be anywhere in particular.
  • Bulgaria is also a realistic place to actually become resident if you want a base: low cost, EU membership, straightforward registration for EU citizens.

VAT

Client location, not yours, drives VAT. EU business clients get reverse-charged invoices, non-EU clients are outside the scope, and EU consumers pull you into OSS. Your travel pattern is irrelevant to VAT and central to income tax.

Substance and residency

The weakest structures are the ones where the founder has never actually left. If you still have a home, a family and 200 nights a year in a high-tax country, that country is likely still your residence, and it will look through the company. Perpetual travel with no residence anywhere is legally possible but fragile; having a real base is the durable version.

Paying yourself

Set a director contribution base so health cover and social security are not left hanging, then take the rest as dividends at 5%. If you become Bulgarian tax resident, the dividend is generally final.

What it costs

Formation from €890, accounting from about €80 a month at low invoice volumes.

Mistakes digital nomads make

  • Assuming the company's residency is your residency.
  • Leaving no social security cover in any country.
  • Using a personal account in your old country to receive company money.

Frequently asked

Do I have to become Bulgarian tax resident?

No, but you need a coherent answer somewhere. The company can be Bulgarian while you are resident elsewhere; the tax bill then depends on that elsewhere.

Can I open a bank account without living there?

Yes, though banks increasingly want a video call and a clear description of the business. EU fintechs are a common complement to a local account.

How many days do I need to spend in Bulgaria?

For personal tax residency the usual test is more than 183 days in a 12-month period, alongside a centre-of-vital-interests test. The company has no day requirement.
