Monthly accounting fees by company profile

Bulgarian bookkeepers price on document volume, VAT status and headcount. Revenue barely matters, which is why a high-margin consultancy often pays less than a small ecommerce store.

Dormant / pre-revenue EOOD

BGN 60-120 (EUR 30-60)

Annual financial statement, register filing, nil returns, basic correspondence with the NRA.

Best fit: A holding entity or a company registered ahead of trading.

Freelancer or consultant, no VAT

BGN 120-200 (EUR 60-100)

Up to ~20 documents a month, bank reconciliation, owner's payroll, annual statement and corporate tax return.

Best fit: One-person service company invoicing a handful of clients.

VAT-registered service company

BGN 200-350 (EUR 100-180)

Monthly VAT return and purchase/sales ledgers, VIES recapitulative statement, Intrastat screening, payroll for 1-3 people.

Best fit: Consulting, SaaS and agency work billing EU clients.

Ecommerce or multi-channel seller

BGN 350-700 (EUR 180-360)

Marketplace and payment-gateway reconciliation, OSS returns, stock and cost of goods, multi-currency.

Best fit: Amazon, Shopify and dropshipping volumes with hundreds of transactions.

Company with staff (5-20 employees)

BGN 400-900 (EUR 200-460) + BGN 20-40 per employee

Full payroll, social security declarations (D1/D6), employment contract registration, sick leave and holiday tracking.

Best fit: Bulgarian development or support teams.

Ranges are market rates observed in Sofia and Plovdiv in 2026 for English-speaking firms serving non-resident owners. Bulgarian-only local bookkeepers are often cheaper but rarely handle cross-border VAT.

The Bulgarian filing calendar

  1. 14th of each month

    VAT return + ledgers

VAT-registered companies file the return, sales and purchase ledgers and pay any VAT due by the 14th for the previous month. The VIES statement for EU B2B sales is due the same day.

  2. 25th of each month

    Payroll declarations

Declaration 1 (per-employee social security) and Declaration 6 (employer totals) for the previous month, with contributions paid by the same date.

  3. Quarterly, by the 30th

    Advance corporate tax

Companies over the turnover threshold pay advance corporate tax instalments; smaller companies settle once a year instead.

  4. 30 June

    Annual corporate tax return

The annual return and the 10% corporate tax payment for the previous financial year are both due by 30 June.

  5. 30 September

    Annual accounts filing

The annual financial statement (ГФО) must be published in the Commercial Register. Missing this is public and is the first thing due-diligence checks catch.

What a proper package covers

  • Monthly bookkeeping in Bulgarian statutory format, which is what the NRA and the register accept - foreign spreadsheets are not a substitute.
  • VAT registration and monthly compliance once you cross BGN 100,000 of taxable turnover, or voluntarily from day one to reclaim input VAT.
  • Payroll for the manager: a Bulgarian company with an active manager owes social security even where no salary is drawn, so this is not optional.
  • Corporate tax computation at the flat 10% rate, plus the 5% withholding on dividends when profit is distributed.
  • Annual financial statement preparation and publication in the Commercial Register.
  • Representation before the National Revenue Agency for audits, notices and refund requests.

Warning signs in a cheap quote

  • A quote with no document limit. Fees quoted 'all inclusive' usually reprice the moment volume appears.
  • No English-language reporting. If you cannot read the trial balance, you cannot review it.
  • Accountant refuses to name a filing calendar. Deadlines in Bulgaria are fixed and public; a firm should be able to state them.
  • No professional indemnity insurance. Penalties for late filings land on the company, not the bookkeeper.
  • Cash-only or invoice-free fees. If your accountant does not invoice properly, assume the same care with your ledgers.

Frequently asked questions

How much does bookkeeping cost in Bulgaria per month?

In 2026, a dormant Bulgarian company costs roughly BGN 60-120 a month, a non-VAT one-person consultancy BGN 120-200, a VAT-registered service company BGN 200-350, and an ecommerce or staffed company BGN 350-900. Fees are driven by document volume, VAT status and payroll headcount, not by revenue.

Do I need a Bulgarian accountant, or can I do it myself?

There is no legal requirement to appoint an accountant, but filings must be in Bulgarian statutory format and are signed off by a person meeting the qualification requirements of the Accountancy Act. In practice every non-resident-owned EOOD uses a local bookkeeper.

When must a Bulgarian company register for VAT?

Mandatory registration applies once taxable turnover reaches BGN 100,000 in any 12 consecutive months, with immediate registration for certain intra-EU and digital services. Voluntary registration is available at any time and is common when most costs carry input VAT.

Does a Bulgarian company need an audit?

Only if it exceeds two of the three statutory size thresholds (balance sheet total, net turnover, average employees) in two consecutive years, or is a public-interest entity. The vast majority of EOODs never reach an audit obligation.

What happens if I file the annual accounts late?

Late publication of the annual financial statement attracts a fine on the company and a separate fine on the manager, and the gap stays visible in the public Commercial Register. Late VAT or payroll filings additionally carry interest on the unpaid amount.

Can I switch Bulgarian accountants mid-year?

Yes. You are entitled to your primary documents and ledger data. Ask for the trial balance, the VAT ledgers already filed, payroll records and the chart of accounts in exportable form, and switch at a month end so no filing period is split.

Is e-invoicing mandatory in Bulgaria?

Bulgaria is aligning with the EU digital reporting timetable, so structured e-invoicing for B2B is being phased in rather than switched on overnight. Companies already invoicing electronically in a structured format will have the least to change.

Need a Bulgarian accountant who reports in English?

We run bookkeeping, VAT and payroll for non-resident owned EOODs, with a fixed monthly fee agreed before you sign and reporting you can actually read.
